Chen Kaige’s much acclaimed, long out of print masterpiece Farewell My Concubine has been restored to celebrate its 30th anniversary. The film deftly explores themes of gender, sexuality, and identity within the backdrop of a changing China and the lives of two opera performers who endure brutal training and form an enduring bond.
Beginning in 1924 and spanning nearly half a century, Farewell My Concubine‘s sumptuous narrative is interwoven with moments from some of the most troublesome times in modern Chinese history, including Japan’s 1937 invasion though to the Chinese Cultural Revolution and its aftermath.
Director Chen Kaige | 1993 | China, Hong Kong | 170 minutes | Rated R | in Mandarin with English subtitles
Cast: Leslie Cheung, Fengyi Zhang, Gong Li, You Ge
