A good old-fashioned romantic melodrama set against the backdrop of the Cold War, Firebird centers around young Air Force private Sergey (Tom Prior, The Theory of Everything; Kingsman: The Secret Service), serving out the final days of his term in the Soviet Air Force during the late 1970s.
With dreams of one day becoming a performer in the theater, he’s eager to begin the next stage of his life. At least he has company, awaiting the end of his conscripted service alongside his best friend Luisa (Diana Pozharskaya), secretary to the base’s Commander.
Enter the dashing Lieutenant Roman Medveyev (Oleg Zagordnii), who arrives at the base looking for all the world like he stepped off the screen from some classic of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Assigned to shuttle the impossibly handsome Lieutenant around the base during his stay, the younger private can’t help but be smitten. And when he discovers the feeling is mutual, the men enter into an intensely passionate love affair.
But their love is a crime according to the laws of their homeland; any attempt to express it is absolutely forbidden. Keeping their romance a secret becomes an increasingly dangerous proposition when their commanding officers begin to grow suspicious of the time the men are spending together. And when Luisa begins to have feelings for the strapping Lieutenant as well, a love triangle develops that seems destined to leave someone wounded and broken-hearted.
Star Tom Prior co-produced and co-wrote the film with director Peeter Rebane, and you can feel his connection to the material in every frame. Inspired by a true story written about in Sergey Fetisov’s memoir “The Story of Roman,” Firebird is an emotional tale of the true cost when men are forced to make the choice between duty and desire.
