2nd Thursday Cinema, Aug 11, Eisenstein in Guanajuato
Eisenstein in Guanajuato is the new film by Peter Greenaway (The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover,) and the subject is a direct hit on the controversial director’s sweet spot. Russian cultural icon Sergei Eisenstein is revered for his innovative, political silent films like Potemkin and October: Ten Days That Shook the World – but not so much for his life as a gay man. In fact, Vladimir Putin would faint while watching Greenaway’s provocative – and graphic – take on the trip that Eisenstein (Finnish actor Elmer Back) took to Mexico in the 1930s. Away from Stalin’s suspicious eyes, the great director finally gets to glory in his sexuality, and the attentions of his guide, Alberto (Luis Alberti).
